Original Ideas and Concepts

The Circus Of Horrors

Meg and I met up over the summer for a coffee and started discussing dead for this years course.
We came up with a very extravagant idea, telling the story of a clown with two faces who arrived at a circus of horrors. We wanted to look into a Vintage themed Circus of Horrors because it allowed us to experiment a lot with the character design as well as the set design.

Here are some of the reference images we found useful when deciding the mood of the piece:

Originally we wanted to look at the idea of having a world within a world, much like Toy Story, where the circus would only come to life when the people leave the room. This is because I have wanted to work with live action and animation in one from for a while and was interested in pursuing the idea.

To create this affect we played around with the idea that the animation would start with a sped up live action part where the viewer would watch Meg and I finishing the set for the puppets and leaving the room. When we left the camera would pan into the first part of the animation.

The film was originally going to start with the two face clown entering the circus coming out of a giant jack-in-the-box (obviously far too ambitious in hind sight) and would then meet a Zoltar machine who would give him a note saying something along the lines of "welcome to the circus of horrors"and the clown would walk into the circus and meet some crazy characters.

We weren't 100% sure where this story would go but we were really excited by this idea, we wanted to do it some justice. This is when we decided to make different parts of this projects over the time of the final year, handing different parts in for different projects in order to fulfil the guidelines. This is the only way Meg and I saw ourselves being able to create such a huge project in the time we have been given.

Since then the story has changed dramatically made much more simple.
We also decided to use this for the collaboration piece so that we could experiment with the idea further.

Where I could improve...

Throughout this project I have learnt a lot about what is to be expected from me as an animator and also what I can expect from the industry...
